Chess & Toast Terms of Use
1. About these terms
These terms are between you and Box Of Clicks Ltd (“we”, “us”), a company registered in England and Wales, company number 06806922, with its registered office at 80 Temple Road, Oxford, OX4 3DL, United Kingdom. They cover the Chess & Toast app and the chessandtoast.com website (together, “Chess & Toast”).
By downloading, installing or using Chess & Toast you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use it. How we handle your information is explained in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.
2. Using Chess & Toast
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable licence to use Chess & Toast on devices you own or control, for your own private enjoyment. You must not use it for any business or commercial purpose.
You must be at least 13 years old to use Chess & Toast. If you are under 18, please make sure a parent or guardian is happy for you to play.
The app is downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play, and the store’s own terms also apply to you. If you get the app from the Apple App Store, Apple’s standard licensed application end user licence agreement applies in addition to these terms, and Apple is not responsible for the app or for supporting it. You are responsible for any data charges your device and network make for using the app.
3. Your player profile
You do not need to create an account. The app gives your device a random player ID and keeps your games, rating and progress against it. You may also choose a display name and avatar, sign in with Game Center, and link a Lichess or Chess.com account. You are responsible for what you choose to link and show.
Invite and friend codes are yours to share with people you trust. Anyone who has a code can use it, so share it carefully.
4. Playing fairly
When you play, you agree not to:
- use a chess engine, another person or any other outside help in a game against another player, or in any way that gives you an unfair advantage;
- cheat, exploit bugs, or use bots, scripts or automation to play, to change ratings, or to gain rewards;
- choose a display name or avatar that is offensive, hateful, sexual, or that impersonates someone else;
- harass, threaten or abuse other players, or use the game to share unlawful or harmful material;
- attack, overload or try to gain unauthorised access to our servers or to other players’ data;
- copy, modify, decompile or reverse engineer the app, except where the law gives you that right.
If you find a bug that lets you do any of these things, please tell us at the address in section 13 instead of using it.
5. What you put into the game
You keep any rights you have in your display name and avatar. You give us permission to store them and show them to other players, so that the game can work. You promise you have the right to use what you choose. We may remove or change a name or avatar that breaks these terms.
6. Games, ratings and rewards
Some opponents in Chess & Toast are other players, and some are computer players. Your rating, streaks, achievements, energy and anything else you earn exist only inside the game. They have no cash value, cannot be sold or transferred, and we may adjust, reset or rebalance them to keep the game fair and fun. Energy is an allowance that limits how much you can play in a given time; how it refills may change, and some ways of refilling it involve watching an advertisement.
Your progress is stored against your player ID. Deleting the app does not by itself delete it, and if you lose your device without having signed in to Game Center it may not be possible to restore it.
7. Advertising and other services
Chess & Toast shows advertising, provided through Google AdMob, unless you have an active membership (section 8). Which ads you see, and whether they are personalised, depends on the choices you make in the app and in your device settings, as explained in our Privacy Policy. The app also works with services run by other companies, such as Apple, Google, Lichess and Chess.com. We do not control those services, and their own terms apply when you use them.
8. Membership and purchases
Chess & Toast is free to download and to play, with advertising. You can choose to buy a monthly membership, which removes the advertising, along with any other benefits shown to you when you buy.
- Price and payment. The price, including any taxes, is shown in the app before you buy. The payment is taken by the Apple App Store or Google Play, using the payment method on your store account, and we do not see your card or payment details.
- Renewal. A membership renews automatically each month at the price shown, until you cancel. The store charges you for the next month shortly before the current one ends.
- Cancelling. You can cancel at any time in your store account settings (Apple ID subscriptions, or Google Play subscriptions). Deleting the app does not cancel a membership. If you cancel, you keep the benefits until the end of the month you have paid for, and you will not be charged again.
- Refunds. Refunds and your right to cancel a purchase are handled by the store you bought from, under its rules and under the law that protects you as a consumer. Nothing here limits those rights.
- Price changes. If we change the price, we will tell you before it applies to you, and the store will ask you to agree to it where the store requires that.
- Your membership. It belongs to the store account that bought it, and may be restored on another device you own using the same store account. It cannot be transferred or shared.
9. Changes to the game, and availability
We work to keep Chess & Toast available, but we cannot promise it will always work without interruption or be free of errors. We may update, change, suspend or stop any part of it, for example to fix problems, to improve it, or for security or legal reasons. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will tell you about a significant change in advance.
10. Our property
Chess & Toast, including its software, art, characters, music, sound, text and design, belongs to us or to the people who license it to us, and is protected by copyright and other laws. These terms give you the right to play the game. They do not give you ownership of any of it.
11. If you break these terms
If you break these terms, we may warn you, remove content, reset ratings or rewards you gained unfairly, or suspend or end your access to the game. We will usually explain why, unless the law or safety stops us. You can stop using Chess & Toast at any time, and you can ask us to delete your data as described in the Privacy Policy.
12. Our responsibility to you
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that the law does not allow us to limit. Your legal rights as a consumer are not affected.
If we fail to follow these terms, we are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking the terms or of our failing to use reasonable care and skill. Loss is foreseeable if you could have expected it, or if it was obvious, when you started to use the app. We are not responsible for loss that was not foreseeable, and we are not responsible for loss of progress, rating or rewards that have no value outside the game beyond what the law requires.
Chess & Toast is for domestic and private use. We are not liable to you for any loss of profit, business, or opportunity.

14. Changes to these terms, and the law that applies
We may update these terms, for example when the game changes or the law does. When we do, we will change the date at the top, and if the change is significant we will tell you in the app. If you keep using Chess & Toast after a change, you accept the updated terms.
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales can decide any dispute, except that if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you may also bring a claim in the courts where you live, and if you live elsewhere you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of your country.
